Choosing a Career Path that's Right for You

Many people use college as a place to learn skills necessary to find a better job. A common problem is that many of these people do not know what field they want their career in. It can be very overwhelming to look through different majors and decide what to learn about. There are many ways to narrow down different jobs in order to find one that best suits you.

When you first enroll in a school, it isn't imperative that you know exactly what you want to do. There are many undergraduate courses you will have to take that are taken by people in all majors. These classes are usually diverse, focusing on a wide range of subjects. It is wise to use these classes as tools to gauge what you like and don't like. At most schools, the subjects of the classes are picked for you (math, science, history, etc). In each category, the school allows you to choose the topic you want to learn about. For instance, in the subject of science, you can learn about chemistry, biology, physics, and more. Find classes in topics you haven't studied before, it might turn out to be your favorite subject, or even your career.

Colleges are filled with guidance counselors and career counselors waiting to help you pick the career of your dreams. These people are there for you. Look at office times or make an appointment to go talk about what you like to do and what you are good at. The counselors are experts in careers and can help guide you in the right path.

Ask Advice!

There are a lot of careers out there that get overlooked by college students. Talk to friends and family to find out exactly what they do and if they enjoy it. If you find a career that interests you, call people who are currently employed in that career and ask them about their jobs. Often, these experts will go to local career fairs where they will be happy to talk to anyone about their profession. Go online and search when the next career fair is coming.

Going to school and starting new jobs are big commitments. Both will be focused on one subject, a topic you will have to talk about every day. Make sure this topic is something you enjoy. Work and school become play if you are doing something you love. Part of going to school is to make an investment to improve your future quality of life. It's hard to be completely happy if you're not doing something that makes you happy. Search around the different opportunities that are presented to you. Weight your options while considering what you like to do and what you are good at.

If you do pick something and it ends up not being what you thought, then get out. School is here to educate you on life. If you try something new and you hate it, at least you know you hate it. It's not the end of the world; with a college degree, it's much easier to get out of one job and find another. If you're in school, it's okay to switch majors. The worst that can happen is you spend more time in school, learning.

There are millions of jobs that will need you as soon as you are out of school. Ultimately, the choice is yours.
