Alternative Medicine Degree

Alternative medicine is considered to be made up of a group of diverse health and medical care systems, products and practices that are not currently covered within conventional medical curriculum taught within the United States. Alternative medicine practices incorporate spiritual, metaphysical or religious underpinnings, and treat diseases, infections or injuries through homeopathic, chiropractic, acupuncture or faith healing ways. Alternative medicine is where science-based Western medicine meets with naturopathic Eastern healing practices. The practice of naturopathy actually treats the patient as a whole, rather than his or her reported symptoms.

There are a variety of alternative medicine programs available to individuals looking to pursue a career in this field of medicine. Available programs include studies in herbalism, naturopathy, anatomy, physiology, holistic nutrition, aroma therapy, surgery, natural health practices, biochemistry, microbiology, homeopathy, natural childbirth, stress management, Eastern medicine, acupuncture, counseling and many more. By pursuing a career in alternative medicine, individuals learn how the body can heal itself by looking for the root of the problem, and identifying ways to remove blocks to natural healing and utilize the skills of holistic nutrition, herbal remedies and other non-invasive homeopathy techniques.

Naturopathy and alternative medicine is a health sciences profession that many doctors worldwide are beginning to explore further and incorporate into their Western medical practices. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in Nursing Degree">healthcare is expected to increase 27 percent through 2014. Additionally, a recent report by the Institute for Alternative Futures noted that approximately two-thirds of the U.S. population will use complementary and alternative medicine measures by 2010, up from one-third in 1990. The IAF also reports that the number of Health Care professionals (to include physicians) that are trained in Chinese medicine will increase to 24,000 by 2010.

After successfully completing an alternative medicine program from an accredited institution, students pursue a number of alternative medicine related career paths, including becoming an acupuncture technician, Ayurveda practitioner, massage therapist, naturopathic medical practitioner, chiropractor, aroma therapist, herbalist, holistic nutritionist, counselor, and many more career opportunities. These career paths are often found in conjunction with conventional medical practices, but can also be practices exclusively to treat patients of many ailments.
