Health Science Degree

Health sciences is a field that is rapidly growing and is employing millions of individuals every year. As this is such a broad field, it is recommended that prospective students research more specific careers before devising an educational plan. There has been a lot of research done in regards to health and medical science careers. Seven of the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 'Ten Fastest Growing Jobs' are healthcare-related: physician assistants, physical therapists, dental hygienists, medical assistants, dental assistants, and home care aides. A degree in health sciences provides a solid introduction to the medical and health field. Pursuing a health science degree can provide a foundation for continuing professional medical training, or it can also lead directly to an entry-level position in the healthcare industry. Many students who earn their Health Science degree also move forward and pursue advanced degrees in Public Health, Business, Health Services Administration, Social Work, Nursing and Medicine, among others.

Health & Medical Sciences Curriculum

The Health and Medical Sciences curriculum starts with a broad undergraduate education in sciences and liberal arts before turning to a particular field of study. Students can specialize in fields including dental hygiene, radiological science, pharmacy, alternative medicine, nutrition, respiratory therapy, clinical laboratory science, health information technology, healthcare administration, nursing and many more. Curriculum within this field of study focuses on the broad perspective of health and wellness at the current population level, as well as exploring health care systems. Studies prepare students to work in a health-care environment including courses in the biological and chemical sciences, such as physiology and anatomy, a humanities core, and a health care systems core. Additional courses are often selected by the student based upon the specific discipline within the health field being pursued, but can also be chosen to explore broader-based interests in health sciences. A degree in this area will open the door for various career opportunities for graduating students.

Career Opportunities in Health Science

While an undergraduate degree in health sciences often leads to additional studies in a professional school for an eventual career in dentistry or medicine, many individuals find rewarding careers in the health sciences field itself. Some of the career opportunities include positions in administration or service, information technology, nursing, medical research, health professional assistants, medical technicians, medical sciences, insurance industry, public health, community agencies, pharmaceuticals, physician assistant positions, peer health counselor training financing and purchasing within the health care field, and so many more.
Health science graduates are experiencing the effects of a strong health-related job market. Graduates are entering directly into the workplace upon graduation, where salaries begin in the $30,000 range, and advance to approximately $55,000 after gaining work experience. Although no education program can guarantee future employment or a set salary, health science graduates can anticipate a high number of job opportunities and rising salaries, as medical facilities compete to attract qualified personnel.
