Political Science Degree

Political Science students examine the development and the function of governments and the behavior of leaders throughout history. During their degree programs, political science majors learn the history and development of government rule by comparing and contrasting the types of political organizations that have ruled over the world--this is to include the formal and informal ways that people and groups of people influence each other.Political scientists understand the progression of our current form of democracy, and can integrate the best practices of the past into new ideas and proposals for our future. The political science major encompasses several concentrations, or areas of politics. Two examples are international relations and local government.Students majoring in political science can choose from undergraduate, graduate or certificate programs. Many poly-sci students and professionals even choose to enhance their existing careers by enrolling in postgraduate studies. Those with significant dedication and life experience can sometimes complete these programs in less than two years.

Political Science Students

Students who major in political science receive a general education in the discipline, but usually focus on one of the following: American government and politics, public law, public policy, political theory, international relations, or comparative politics. After graduation, majors enter many different careers, including government service, education, political consulting, journalism, and business. Some of the core classes designed to prepare students for a career in their chosen field are comparative politics, international relations, public policy, public opinion research, modern political theory and American political theory.Students even analyze the workings of governments from a distance by pursuing careers as faculty members at colleges and universities. Independent study programs allow students to tailor course work to their specific interests and to work with professors on an individual level. Many political science majors take part in exchange programs, especially those students interested in American, comparative, and international politics. Also, students are encouraged to take on internships and field work to help balance their knowledge of theory with hands-on experience. Students may be able to earn academic credit for internships in such settings as the United Nations, the White House, Capitol Hill, law offices and courts, political campaigns, and social service agencies.

Careers in Political Science

Careers in government or public service, either as elected politicians, support staffers, or consulting analysts, are quite popular among political science graduates.Other political science majors pursue careers as tenure track faculty members at colleges and universities across the country.Professors not only teach, but can be accountable for influencing current government policies by writing essays in political journals, by engaging politicians in debates, and by researching the effects of proposed laws. Faculty members also influence students to explore controversial ideas, which will in turn affect the future of our laws and ruling bodies. Some political science graduates never intend on holding political office, and may end up writing bestselling books, commenting on weblogs, and appearing on political talk shows. Many graduates have the dream of working in and around Washington D.C., or becoming mayor of a particular city. Some start off in this field as unpaid volunteers or interns. From there, they continue their careers by putting their skills to work in a small election or in a regional campaign, but the most successful professionals can leverage their success into large salaries by demonstrating their loyalty and expertise in a minimal timeframe.
