Bridal Consulting Industry and Career Overview

These days most couples and parents do not have the time to plan their own weddings so they are looking to bridal and wedding consultant experts to assist in planning and coordinating their special wedding day.Bridal Consultants are expected to display a high level of expertise in their field by displaying advanced product and vendor knowledge gained through building relationships with local venues and wedding vendors.Consultants are looked upon and hired to suggest, review and recommend a variety of vendors to include: ceremony and reception venues, catering companies and menus, flowers and floral arrangements, photography and videography, entertainment to include music, transportation, invitations, etc.Attention to detail and impeccable time management skills are a must when planning such detailed events.Great customer service skills are required to service brides, groom and family members during potentially stressful situations and decision making processes.Coordination of wedding party, family members and vendors during the day of the event is typically expected.

How to Become a Wedding Consultant

Bridal Consulting is not typically a career where most current professionals obtained a formal degree.A large number of wedding consultants previously entered the field through a related field or opportunity. However, as the lucrative industry grows and the career opportunities become more competitive, additional training in wedding consulting and related skills is beneficial. In formal schools a broad balanced knowledge of business, communications and liberal arts are appropriate areas of study. If a more specialized trade is of interest, fashion design, graphic design, interior design, photography, cooking/home economics are all useful in the wedding consultant field. As demand increases, a number of one to two year programs are being offered at various community colleges and online and campus based trade schools.Classes offered through these programs include a variety of both business focused and wedding detail and trends to include: establishing the business, how to conduct consults, contract development, scheduling the wedding, timeline, wedding trends and fashions, budget design and management, understanding the brides needs, etc.

Wedding Industry Job Opportunities

A wide variety of job opportunities exist within the bridal and wedding consultant field. Many hotels, local convention and meeting centers and community centers hire wedding consultants to assist in the coordination and execution of booked wedding events. The majority of consultants are self-employed with a number providing an additional specialized service such as floral arranging, photography, jewelry making or beauty services. The secondary specialty allows the consultants to market more than one service, therefore bringing in more business. In addition to wedding ceremony and reception coordination, consultants are needed at department and home stores, to help assist in the wedding gift registration process. As the wedding industry expands, a number of resources are being produced and distributed including bridal magazines, websites, fashion and trade shows.Consultants with extensive experience and knowledge of current industry tips and trends are now being sought after to contribute to the growth of these products and resources.Weddings are held all year round so opportunities exist during every season.
